Darjeeling is nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is the only place in the Himalayan region from where one can see four out of Five of the highest peaks of the world - Everest or Mt Sagarmathatha (8848 meters), Mt Kanchendzonga (8589 meters), Mt Lotse (8571 meters) and Mt Mahakalu (8481 meters). In addition to this stunning backdrop, Darjeeling is surrounded by sprawling tea gardens which produce the world famous 'Champagne of all Teas'. This region is a paradise for nature lovers and tranquillity seekers. Trekking, hiking, bird watching, tea tasting and monastic tours are all available. Alternatively, it is the perfect place to relax.
Historically, Darjeeling was part of Sikkim and Nepal until the Raja of Sikkim handed it to the "British East India Company". There is a distinct colonial influence in many of the buildings and gardens throughout the area. Take a stroll through the streets or even joyrides on the UNESCO preserved Toy Train and feel welcome amongst the courteous and hospitable Lepcha, Nepali and Bhutia cultures.
