Tibet is a fascinating land of timeless splendor, unique traditions and breathtaking scenery. This ‘Roof of the World’ is an extremely remote area and is isolated by the formidable Himalayan ranges.
Tibet was opened to tourism in 1985; before this, it avoided influence from the West and developed its own unique culture and religion. Magnificent religious architecture was important to indicate the prestige of the ruling spiritual leaders. Tashilhunpo Monastery, for instance, contains thousands of unique statues, paintings (Thangka), and religious books that would take weeks to visit in detail. Other monasteries in Tibet are crowded by pilgrims who have come to fulfill their vows and wishes.
What better way to see it all than on a Classic Royal Enfield motorbike. The roads are mostly broad and sealed (with some gravel stretches), and traffic is right hand and usually thin. Here, people drive on the right-hand side of the road. It really is the trip of a lifetime: you will pass through time forgotten Tibetan villages, visit ancient monasteries, and climb some of the worlds’ highest roads with breath-taking views of the Himalayas.
